STL Celebrity FAQ: Norbert Leo Butz


Claim to Fame: Broadway stalwart who has two Tony awards for his lead roles in the musicals Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Catch Me If You Can. He also was in the original cast of the smash hit Wicked. He is currently starring in Mercy Street, a Civil War drama on PBD and Bloodline, a Netflix original series.

Passion: The Angel Band Project. Created to provide help for women victims of sexual violence after his sister’s murder, the non-profit organization uses music as therapy to aid survivors. Ted Drewes frozen custard and the St. Louis Cardinals remain high on his list of to-do activities when he comes back home to visit with family and friends.

More: Butz is the seventh of 11 kids in his big, Catholic family. He attended the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University (located in suburban Webster Groves, MO) and got his post-high school start on stage with roles in productions at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, located on the university’s campus. Visitors can see tomorrow’s rising stars at The Rep, celebrating its 50th season this year under the artistic direction of Steven Woolf, who encouraged Butz in his career path.
