A Tribute to Clark Terry with Byron Stripling & the Jazz St. Louis Big Band (Jazz at the Bistro Concert Series)
Trumpeter Clark Terry, a St. Louis native and one of the greatest influences on jazz and jazz education in the music’s rich history, passed away on February 21, 2015. In honor of his great legacy, the Jazz St. Louis Big Band will perform the music of Duke Ellington and Count Basie (Terry was one of the few musicians to play in both bandleader’ orchestras), as well as the newly commissioned “CT Suite – Three Portraits in Blues,” joined by one of Terry’s premier proteges, Byron Stripling. The suite, commissioned by Stripling’s Columbus Jazz Orchestra, features three movements reflecting on the jubilant life of Mr. Terry, composed by Dennis Mackrel, John Clayton, and Chad Eby. Jazz St. Louis has commissioned local trombonist Cody Henry to compose a fourth movement for the “CT Suite.”
