St. Louis has a long history of artistic, athletic and scientific excellence by its multi-ethnic citizenry, and the Gateway City still serves as “home base” for many of our most celebrated stars. Here’s a list of some local all-stars who made a name for themselves in the arenas of sports, publishing, music and television.

Chuck Berry

The “Father of Rock and Roll” calls St. Louis home and still treats the crowd at Blueberry Hill to a monthly jam session.

Jackie Joyner-Kersee

This Olympic medalist is not only a track and field all-star, but an advocate for kids and her community.

Russ Mitchell

This native St. Louisan has made a name for himself as a news anchor on CBS’s “The Early Show.”

Nelly

Known for his tracks celebrating “the Lou,” this hip hop star also runs a nonprofit organization.

Naam Pruitt

This local Thai cooking instructor and cookbook author prides herself on using fresh, local ingredients.

Ozzie Smith

This beloved former Cardinals player is a fixture in the city’s philanthropy circle.
