NBC-TV’s long-running hit comedy The Office couldn’t have operated as hysterically as it did without its St. Louis stars: Jenna Fischer, Phyllis Smith and Ellie Kemper. The three thespians hail from the Gateway City, as did several behind-the-scenes show staffers. In fact, there were so many St. Louis alums on The Office set, they once held a gooey butter cake bake-off contest.
Claim to fame: Portrayed party planning sales rep Phyllis for nine seasons on The Office. Stole the show and movie-goers’ hearts as the voice of Sadness in the Academy Award-winning animated film Inside Out.
High School: Cleveland High, Class of 1967
Passion: Dance. Phyllis was a member of the St. Louis Civic Ballet and made her career as a hoofer before a knee injury sidelined her and put her on the acting path. During the 1970s, Phyllis was rah-rah-rahing at Busch Stadium as a St. Louis Football Cardinals cheerleader.
