An American in Paris

January 13, 2024 @ 7:30 pm

On Jan. 13, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra will take a detour through jazz-obsessed Europe.

Darius Milhaud, Igor Stravinsky and Kurt Weill all fell in love with American jazz, and their sassy music bears its stamp.

Victor Goines, jazz clarinetist and president of Jazz St. Louis, will rock and wail in Stravinsky’s Ebony Concerto. The performance will also feature Weill’s Suite from The Threepenny Opera, including hits such as “Mack the Knife,” and the program will end with the honking horns and swaggering tunes of Gershwin’s An American in Paris.

This concert is part of a very special festival presented by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and Jazz St. Louis. In three concerts over two weeks, conductor Leonard Slatkin will explore the ways that jazz has enriched orchestral music.
