Transit of Mercury
On May 9, watch the transit of Mercury, one of the major astronomical events of the year, at the Saint Louis Science Center’s James S. McDonnell Planetarium. When Mercury passes between the Earth and Sun, it is visible as a tiny, black dot crossing the Sun’s face. Looking directly at the Sun is dangerous and you should observe a transit only through specialized instruments like the ones at the Planetarium. Members of the St. Louis Astronomical Society will join Planetarium educators to answer your questions and help you safely observe the transit of Mercury. Don’t miss this opportunity! You won’t get another chance to see a transit of Mercury until 2019.
