SUMMARY:Begin Again: 50 Years and Counting
DESCRIPTION:Begin Again: 50 Years and Counting marks Laumeier’s 50th anniversary by celebrating five decades of artist commissions and exhibitions. Featuring hundreds of artists and rarely seen works from Laumeier’s collection\, the exhibition highlights the Park’s unique position at the intersection of public art\, contemporary museum practice\, and the natural world. \nCentering on artworks that have come and gone and proposals that were never fully realized\, the exhibition embraces change and impermanence\, emphasizing sculpture and sculpture parks are dynamic and ephemeral rather than fixed and unchanging. It also honors the many artists and commissions Laumeier has supported\, showcasing its long-standing and evolving relationship with artists and the natural environment\, while also acknowledging the complexity of curating public artworks in an outdoor setting. \nFeaturing materials drawn from Laumeier’s collections and archives\, Begin Again presents rarely seen drawings\, sketches\, studies\, photographs\, sculptural models\, and maquettes that illuminate the creative processes. Audio and video elements further amplify artists’ voices and insights. Arranged chronologically by decade\, the exhibition invites visitors to move metaphorically through time\, wandering through the Park’s history. \nOver 50 years\, Laumeier has supported more than 1\,000 artists\, including many women and artists of color at various stages of their careers. This presentation celebrates the remarkably diverse group who have shaped Laumeier\, reflecting a sustained commitment to a broad range of voices and perspectives. \nThroughout the show\, visitors are invited to reconsider and share their memories around what makes Laumeier a unique place that has inspired curiosity and wonder for more than 50 years\,  through Laumeier Stories\, a digital storytelling project.

SUMMARY:Night Comfort
DESCRIPTION:The High Low Gallery presents a new exhibition\, Night Comfort\, featuring works by St. Louis artist Jeremy Rabus\, opening Friday\, March 27 and running through Sunday\, June 14. Night Comfort explores nostalgia through abstract paintings inspired by 1980s video imagery\, including Scanimate graphics from commercials and TV intros. \nColors and shapes are drawn from archived VHS tapes and online sources\, evoking the comfort\, simplicity\, and slow pace of the era. The show honors Tom LaBrie\, a late-night T.V. movie host\, and includes gallery elements like Masonite faux-wood paneling and 1970s-style pendant lamps that enhance the immersive\, nostalgic experience. \nThe Gallery at The High Low is open to the public during café hours with no appointment necessary\, every day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

SUMMARY:Looking Back Toward the Future: Contemporary Photography from China
DESCRIPTION:More than 40 large-scale photographs created in China between 1993 and 2006 make up Looking Back Toward the Future at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. \nFeaturing the work of 14 contemporary artists\, the survey represents a wide cross section of the conceptual photography that flourished in the nation in the decades following the 1989 protests and massacre in Tiananmen Square – a pivotal moment of sociopolitical change that signaled the beginning of strict repressive measures and ended democratic social reforms that had been initiated after the death of communist leader Mao Zedong in 1976. \nThe free exhibition is divided into three interrelated thematic sections – The Presence of the Past\, East and West and Performance and the Body – which together explore how these artists used performance in conjunction with diverse photographic and aesthetic methods to capture\, freeze and criticize the new sociopolitical\, economic and cultural environment of China. \nOn view for the first time at the museum on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis\, these glossy photographs constitute a significant recent addition to the institution’s holdings of contemporary Chinese art. Created during a tumultuous period of recent history\, they together make visible the radical transformations that China underwent during these critical decades\, challenging past\, present and future.
