Whimsical new digital campaign marks “The Monumental Return” of St. Louis’ favorite explorers

ST. LOUIS (September 17, 2018) – Lewis and Clark’s journey from St. Louis to the Pacific Coast has been well documented but what transpired on their lesser known but equally exhilarating return to the region? That is the premise behind an amusing new Explore St. Louis digital campaign entitled “The Monumental Return of Lewis and Clark.”

The series was created by Darling Makery and produced by Coolfire Studios, both St. Louis-based companies, and is available on all Explore St. Louis’ social media platforms and explorestlouis.com/lewisandclark, the comical campaign tracks the twosome’s made-up mythical mishaps and misadventures back to St. Louis.

“Humor is a great way to attract attention and engage visitors, and the Monumental Return of Lewis and Clark doesn’t disappoint,” said Brian Hall, Chief Marketing Officer for Explore St. Louis. “I encourage everyone to take a few moments from their busy days to watch the episodes. They are monumentally fun.”

Featuring a prologue and four episodes (Disembarkation, Highs & Lows, Almost There, and The Re-entry), the vignettes chart the canoe-carrying characters as they stumble through the Rocky Mountains, cross the Kansas plains, and pick up a couple of breadcrumbs before reaching their final destination: St. Louis and the newly renovated Gateway Arch grounds and museum.

Each episode opens with a bouncy, light-hearted music with the lyrics: “While not exactly accurate, we think you will remark, it is a monumental return for Meriwether Lewis and his trusty sidekick Clark!” A narrator also pops into each episode to frame their adventures and further chronicle their trip home.

The final episode culminates with Lewis and Clark reaching St. Louis only to be distracted by some of the region’s finest attractions. Upon reaching their final destination – the Gateway Arch – the two excitably but unwisely attempt to climb the magnificent monument with a rope. Enter Sacagawea. She intervenes and invites them to ride the elevator with her instead. The episode concludes with the trio atop the Arch, admiring the breathtaking St. Louis landscape from the windows as Clark proclaims: “You can see all the way back from the beginning of our journey from here. I think we have reached our destiny.”

“The Monumental Return of Lewis and Clark” also features a colorful and humorous map showing how the two characters see St. Louis, tracking their footsteps to various St. Louis attractions and neighborhoods.

Viewers are invited to binge watch all five installments and enter for a chance to win an Expeditioner’s Experience in St. Louis, complete with a two-night stay, rooftop dinner and VIP tour of the Arch.
