5 Things to Do this Weekend in St. Louis 1/9 – 1/11

Friday January 9, 2015

Happy Friday! It’s time for a fun-filled weekend in St. Louis. If you are still pulling your plans together, here are a few suggestions to help make this a memorable weekend.

Cirque du Soleil: Varekai – January 7 – January 11
Head to Chaifetz Arena this weekend for the award-winning French-Canadian circus as they preform Varekai.  Deep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an extraordinary world – a world where something else is possible. A world called Varekai. From the sky falls a solitary young man, and the story of Varekai begins. Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world populated by fantastical creatures, this young man sets off on an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. On this day at the edge of time, in this place of all possibilities, begins an inspired incantation to life rediscovered. The word Varekai means “wherever” in the Romany language of the gypsies the universal wanderers. This production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition, and to the infinite passion of those whose quest takes them along the path that leads to Varekai.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner – January 7 – February 1
Head to the Repertory Theatre for “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” The play is based on the original screenplay and award-winning film, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” follows the story of a young interracial couple, their love and their parents who mean well, but might not fully understand as much as they imagined.

Saint Louis Blues vs Carolina Hurricanes – January 10
The Blues continue a seven-game home stretch in a match against the Carolina Hurricanes, days after David Backes had an impressive four-goal performance against the Arizona Coyotes.

Memories of Elvis – January 10
Celebrate the King on the weekend that would have marked his 80th birthday with a two-hour performance by one of the most well-known Elvis cover singers around, Steve Davis is back in town with his Mid-South Revival for a “Memories of Elvis” show at the Pageant.

The Bad Plus – January 7 – January 10
Genre-defying, engaging, progressive and intelligent, The Bad Plus hits the stage at Jazz St. Louis with more than 15 years’ experience in the jazz music genre. Don’t miss this show presented by New Music Circle and KDHX.
