314 Day Celebration

The mathematical constant “PI” (symbolized as the Greek letter π or the decimal 3.14) continues forever, and the digits 3-1-4 hold lasting significance with St. Louisans as the hometown area code prefix. To celebrate the connection between those numbers, March 14 and our city, the Saint Louis Science Center is hosting several free activities surrounding this date.
314 Day Celebration
The Science Center will spotlight 314 Day’s festivities by illuminating the dome of the James S. McDonnell Planetarium with the “314 Day” logo. The lighting will run from sundown to late evening on both Friday (March 13) and Saturday (March 14).
Pi Day
The Science Center’s Pi-themed celebration on March 14 (from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) spans across all galleries and will include hands-on activities, demonstrations and experiments for those of all ages. Look for the π symbol around the facility and join us for:
- Interactive games at the Math Cart on the Lower Level.
- Pizza and pie puzzles and a planetary lineup in the Planetarium Lobby, along with solar telescope viewing outside (weather permitting).
- An explanation of how pi coincides with cell function in the Life Science Classroom.
- A demonstration on Pi-ku (poetry consisting of 3, 1 and 4 syllable lines) and mechanical drawing in MakerSpace.
- A demonstration on how pi is used in agriculture in GROW!
