In his “Ancient Rings” series, Jim Scheller transforms each vessel into a meditation on time, continuity, and humanity’s spiritual connection to the past. The pieces from the collection shown together at Third Degree Glass mark the first significant gathering of his evocative kiln-formed glass vessels and his first solo exhibition in St. Louis. Since its successful premiere in 2023, the “Ancient Rings” series has grown from 23 pieces to over 70 and continues to expand.

While individual works from the series, including several award-winning pieces, have been exhibited across the United States, this exhibition offers a rare chance to experience the cohesive vision of “Ancient Rings” in one place.

Each vessel is crafted within a framework of ivory rings and made from thousands of small pieces meticulously cut from sheet glass. Inspired by geological formations, ancient textiles, and the natural rhythms of life, the vessels explore themes of continuity, legacy, and the vessel form as a symbol of humanity’s desire to preserve and honor what is sacred. Through vibrant colors, layered patterns, and flowing forms, Scheller invites viewers to reflect on the cyclical nature of life, transformation, and our shared connection to the past.

These pieces balance structure with organic flow, permanence with transformation, drawing the viewer into a contemplative space on the cycles of life and the interwoven stories across generations. Scheller encourages viewers to see vessels not merely as containers, but as symbols of inner life and the unbroken thread of history, each holding a unique narrative within the vast continuum of existence.
