History Talk: Julia Dent Grant – Diplomat

Join us as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Julia Dent Grant’s birth in St. Louis on January 26, 1826. The presentation will trace Julia‘s life from her childhood when she interceded with her father on behalf of the enslaved at the plantation to her widowhood when she befriended Varina Davis, wife of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. It will also focus on Julia Dent Grant’s role as a diplomat and unofficial ambassador. Pam Sanfilippo, former historian at Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, will discuss how Julia’s personality made her well suited for her diplomatic duties, both in her personal interactions and in world affairs. Cake and punch reception to follow the presentation.
