The Missouri Historical Society presents Pop-Up Collections Displays - "St. Louis: The Gateway City"!

St. Louis has long been known as the “Gateway to the West” because it served as a launching point for the 19th-century exploration and expansion beyond the Mississippi River. This display explores the multiple meanings of St. Louis’s “gateway” identity; highlights other cities with similar claims; and showcases the history of the Gateway Arch, the iconic monument symbolizing the city’s role in connecting America’s past and future.
