Feast on St. Louis in New York

Several of St. Louis’ best chefs were in New York City on Monday, April 9, to highlight our growing local culinary scene.

In partnership with Feast, Explore St. Louis hosted a Feast on St. Louis luncheon to give New York-based media a taste of St. Louis’ food scene. The event took place in Danny Meyer’s famed North End Grill, and the celebrated St. Louis-born restaurateur addressed and welcomed the group at the beginning of the program.

Participating chefs included Gerard Craft of Niche Food Group; Kevin Nashan of Sidney Street Cafe and Peacemaker Lobster & Crab Co.; Michael and Tara Gallina of Vicia; Mike Randolph of Público, Privado and Half & Half and Tamara Keefe of Clementine’s Naughty & Nice Creamery. Brewer Stephen Hale of Schlafly Beer was also on hand to discuss how the St. Louis beer scene has evolved over the past few years.

In addition to a full lunch featuring highlights from each of the restaurants – nduja agnolotti with sweet potato from Craft, juice pulp falafel from the Gallinas and gooey butter cake ice cream from Keefe, to name a few – the event featured a panel discussion hosted by Feast publisher Cat Neville.

Overall, the chefs discussed how food is helping to drive interest in the region and encouraging the growth of tourism. Craft, a Washington, D.C. native, chatted about why he chose to make St. Louis his home base when he opened the original Niche restaurant. Nashan discussed how he highlights local ingredients, including the paddlefish roe in his smoked Missouri trout salad served at the event. The Gallinas, who moved to St. Louis from New York City, chatted about how they developed the concept for Vicia – named one of the best new restaurants in the country by Eater and Bon Appétit – and the pivotal role local farms play in their work. The discussion also included each chef’s favorite things about St. Louis, and why people should consider a visit.

“This event showcased the vibrant and award winning St. Louis culinary scene to New York food and travel journalists, meeting professionals and tour operators,” Explore St. Louis chief marketing officer Brian Hall says. “The audience raved about the entire experience and we anticipate a series of positive stories about our region.”
